About many centuries ago, the small inhabitants of the Small village of Tankute had been known to live in peace and unity. The Inhabitants of Tankute were made up of two types of beings, the normal human beings and the Cannibals alias the Maneaters. The Cannibals were those who never aged, they feed on fresh animal meat though they also eat real food like humans . The Territory of Tankute had always been guided by the fine warriors of Tankute, The Manhunters. The Manhunters are good set of fighters whose members were always trained from birth , every descendant of a manhunters boy or girl automatically becomes a Manhunter. The Manhunters had fought against lot of villages who had at one time or the other tried to wedge war against us. With the Manhunters, the inhabitants of Tankute felt safe and secured. We continued to live in harmony until about a century ago when the cannibals suddenly became bad, they wanted to rule us and thus started feeding on the humans, those they didn’t want to feed on , they bit them to also become cannibals like them. The Manhunters took to action immediately and fought gallantly against the Man-eaters. The Cannibals couldn’t be killed with just knives and swords, they only die by fire. With the gods being with the Manhunters, they were soon able to send the cannibals out of Tankute , into the jungle.
We continued to live in peace hoping it had ended, but no, we were wrong. The real problem started when the Manhunters began to eat themselves, apparently, during the fight, some Man-eaters might have bitten some Manhunters and thus turning them into Man-eaters . At first, those Man-eaters behaved normal like they were still normal humans, but on the long run, their taste for flesh increased and they began to kill the Manhunters or bit some to also become Man-eaters. Seeing the advantage, the Man-eaters that had been sent into the jungle came back and started attacking us while the Manhunters strived to protect us against the Man-eaters from the Jungle and against those among the Manhunters. That was how it had been for about hundred years ago till date, i existed since then till now, I witnessed all that happened . Does that ring a bell? I have existed for more than 100 of centuries, only the Man-eaters live for so long. My name is Shallom and I am a peaceful cannibal among the ManhuntersMay 28, 2018 at 2:09 am #38May 28, 2018 at 2:10 am #39
The Guardians Of Tankute
Episode: Episode 1
I was born into the family of Ewite, my dad was a Manhunter a great and skillful fighter. Since one of my parent happen to be a Manhunter, then I must also be a Manhunter. According to tradition, I must be ridden on a horse to the sea side where I will be dedicated to the gods of strength and wisdom, ” Gods of our land, a new one has come, give her strength to defend your great Tankute, I will call her Shallom Ewite” My father would have said. The Manhunters live in secret from the indigene of Tankute, they have a settlement in the village provided for them.
I was 24 years old when the fight between us and the Man-eaters began, I was involved in the fight and that was where I was bitten by Kendo, a strong Man-eaters. That bite change my life forever, I began to have the taste for human flesh but for a while, I was able to control myself. It wasn’t for too long , at a point, I started sneaking to the bush to hunt and eat raw animals , but the taste for flesh won’t still go. I thought I was the only Man-eaters among the Manhunters, but as years went by, I knew I wasn’t when about 20 of us didn’t age. I wasn’t the only Man-eaters but I can say that I am among the good few, I only eat animals and human feed, never human flesh.
You might be surprised while the villagers haven’t noticed us and killed us since we didn’t age, we were considered as sacred being, and we only come into the village with masks to protect our sacredness, it is an abomination to know who a manhunter is , a manhunter is considered a masquerade, only a manhunter knows a manhunter. As time went on, my mates died and new Manhunters came in, only the ones who were man- eaters like me remained. Out of the new generation of Manhunters was Wenakite, the only son of Uddin who is dead now . it was like the gods choose Wenakite to become a Manhunter, because the day he was born, the thunder stroke, the rain poured even if it was in the heart of the dry season.
” Shallom Ewite, I know you are a Man-eater” Mologwui told me one afternoon, i was shocked, no manhunter has ever confronted the fact that I am a Man-eater. Mologwu is a Manhunter, though I lived before him, but now he is about 95 years. ” Since I was born, I have never seen you aged, you were before me and you remained as you were before I came” he told me, ” Yes. I won’t lie to you Mologwu, I was bitten long ago ” I told him in tears. ” Hmm, I know its not your choice to be and I can see the good person in you, please protect the Manhunters against your kind, I smell blood flow very soon, fight for the Manhunters” he told me, that was the last time I heard Mologwu talk, he was dead the next morning.
If I am to tell you all about the Manhunters, I might not be done till eternity, I will only tell you guys those I think you need to know for this narration, all I tell you now apply to this narration. The women among the Manhunters can’t marry ordinary men, their husbands must also be trained Manhunters, reason being that the wife is not meant to be stronger than her husband. The men on their own side can marry who they want to, as a matter of fact some men don’t even want to marry their fellow Manhunters , that’s why I am still unmarried or maybe that’s not the reason, I am scared of the fact that I am a Man eater.
Wenakite grew up to be a strong great fighter just like his father, not only was he strong, he was also handsome and loyal. He took me as a friend, he never knew I was a Man-eaters. We fought together against enemies and brought back victory to the village. ” Shallom, I want to go see the king tomorrow” He told me one evening as I sat outside his tent eating roasted yam ( Remember I told you we the Man-eaters also eat human feed). ” Why?” I asked , ” The only time a manhunter go to visit the king is if he wants to get married or he wants to announce war” He told me, ” So which who are you to do?” I asked him, ” I want to get married” He told me, I dropped the roasted yam. ” For real, have you seen a woman?” I asked him, ” Yes, I saw a girl at the stream two days ago” he said and I busted into laughter, ” Just two days is not enough to love a girl” I told him, ” Hmmm, its enough for me” He said. ” And you, why are you not married? ” he asked me, ” A manhunter has not approached me yet” I told him .
So that was it, with that, Wenakite got married to his beautiful maiden, I was happy for him. Now at this time, the Maneaters among us started to raise against the real humans especially Wenakite, they say he was too authoritative because he was the ” Warrior lord” as we call it. Wenakite wasn’t authoritative, he was only being loyal and ready for duty. This got the Maneaters angry I knew what will soon follow, they will kill him, he is not the first, not the second, not the third, a lot of Manhunters had been killed before him, but it seems Wenakite is not just an ordinary Manhunter, he was chosen by the gods of strength and wisdom.
I made it up in my mind to defend wenakite against the Man eaters among us, I will try my best to protect him. By this time, his wife was already pregnant, about a month pregnant.
One evening, I was walking round our settlement, when I happen to pass by the tent of Chila and Karma, they are also man eaters, the head of the Man eaters among us. ” So tomorrow is the day Wenakite is going to announce war at Zumga, how far have you gone with the plan?” I heard Chila say to his twin brother Karma, ” Yes, I have already mobilized the boys, they will attack him on the way” Karma said and they laughed, ” Warrior lord my foot” Karma added, ” Those that came before him have gone” Chila said and they laughed again. On hearing that, I ran off to Wenakite’s tent, but only to find out that he has gone to see his wife. I took my horse and made to go look for him in the village where his wife is, I wore my mask and took along my sword as I climbed on my beautiful black horse. I rode out of our settlement into the jungle, we live after the jungle. ” faster” I shouted to my house and like it heard me, it increased it pace. It rode until we got to the middle of the jungle when I thought I heard footsteps. The jungle belongs to the Man eaters, that was their new settlement after we sent them out of Tankute, ” Slow down” I said to my horse as I climbed down from it so as to look for stones, with the stones I will make fire to keep the Man eaters away. I got two stones and turned back to face my horse, it was dead, it laid down dead on the ground as blood gushed out of it’s neck, it had been killed by a Man eater. ” No” I cried to myself as I ran towards my horse, ” No!!” I shouted in anger and drew out my sword. ” Shallom” I heard someone call from behind, I turned sharply to face whosoever, it was a man, he had blood stains on his mouth, a Man eater. I recognized him at once as Kendo, the Man eater who had bitten me long ago, ” You again?” I asked as I made to strike the stones” You want to strike the stone, are you forgetting something here, you are also a Man eater, so dear, we both die” he reminded me.May 28, 2018 at 2:11 am #40
THE GUARDIANS OF TANKUTE
He was right, I was also a Man-eater and if I strike the fire, It might mistakenly touch me causing me to melt. Yeah, that’s how we die, when the fire touches you, you automatically Melt away, that’s how a Man eater is killed. ” What do you want ?” I asked him dropping the stones, ” Shallom Ewite, I wonder why you are like this” he said laughing, ” you are one of us, why don’t you come in with us, why do you prefer to be with the Manhunters? ” he asked, ” Because I want to save life and not take it, because I am good and not evil as you
and your folks are, because I love to be human and not a cannibal ” I shouted, ” Hmm, only if you realize it’s a good thing having the ability to live till eternity ” he said , I shook my head in disagreement, ” I prefer to be human” I said and immediately turned back to go, I remembered I had Wenakite to save. ” why do you so much care about him, Wenakite? ” he asked me, I turned to face him , I was shocked. ” You are going to the village to inform him not to journey to Zumga city, you want to protect him against your kind, Chila and Karma” he told me, now I was now scared. ” How do you know that?” I asked him, ” Hmmm, that why we are man eaters, we are different from humans in all dimension, we have the ability to read minds and know human thought, you haven’t discovered that dimension in yourself” he laughed, ” How can I do that?” I asked him, ” It’s not something you should learn, it’s in you” he concluded and turned backing me, he vanished into the darkness of the night. I also turned, took one last , long stare at my dead horse and ran off into the woods, I ran as my legs could take me, I fell lot of times but will always roll up and continue with my journey. Most times I would turn back sharply and draw out my sword ready for a fight, I thought I heard footsteps. At long last, I got to the village, it was as silent as a graveyard, it was the darkest hour before dawn and obviously the villagers were still busy enjoying their peaceful sleep. I continued with my running towards Wenakite’s wife house, I have been there just once and that was when the king came to bless them as man and wife, all the Manhunters were present there but the villagers were not, its an abomination seeing a Manhunter as Wenakite wouldn’t be wearing his Mask on the day his wife was to be handed over to him by the king, only the king has the right to know who a manhunter is, and of course their partners.
I didn’t find it easy locating his wife’s house but I finally did. I looked around and there was no sign of his white horse, he never went anywhere without Lulu his horse. ” What do I do now?” I asked myself standing arm akimbo in front of the small hut. No one opens the door for a stranger in the middle of the night, only cannibals come to the village at night , that was their belief, or were they right, am actually a Cannibal.
I turned around and that was when my eyes caught the small wooden window on the hut, it was opened.. ” Perfect” I breathed looking around to make sure no one was in sight. I moved a little bit backwards did a jump to grab the window which was not very high. I lifted myself and squeezed myself through it, I landed down the room with a loud thud. I got up and saw something coming towards my neck, I bent down swiftly and did a forward roll. It was Wenakite’s wife, she had attacked me with a cutlass but I was fast enough to weave it. ” I come in peace” I told her calmly, ” No cannibals comes in peace” She said, ” Am not a cannibal, I am a manhunter” I said, ” Only the Cannibals move in the darkness of the night” she said pointing the cutlass at me, I took a good look at her, she was beautiful like Wenakite would always say, I also noticed her protruding stomach. ” Because what I hold is like fire, it must be dropped soon enough. where is your husband? ” I asked her, ” He left not long ago, he said he is going to the village of Zumga ” She said, she was probably now feeling a bit comfortable. ” No, it can’t be” I shouted as I walked towards the door, ” What is it?” She asked me, ” Wenakite is in danger” I answered as I stormed out the door, ” Wait” she said but I had already ran off, towards the city of Zumga, it was then I discovered a new dimension of myself, I never got tired running, that means the Cannibals never gets tired. I ran into the bush, I couldn’t imagine my speed, I seem to be running faster than I could imagine, I was getting into another dimension. I was still with my mask, was in my fighting garment, the Manhunters garment. I didn’t fall this time as I ran, I would occasionally jump over fallen trees, climb small hills and continued to run. I could soon hear the tack, tack sound of a horse, it should certainly be Wenakite’s. ” Wenakite!!!” I shouted at the top of my voice as I continued to run but got no reply. ” Wena….” I was about shouting again when someone jumped on me from nowhere, ” Who are you to come rescue him?” He asked me as he pushed me to the ground, I did a back roll and regained my balance. ” Who are you to kill him?” I asked the boy, he was a fine looking young man, he is not among the Manhunters, Chila and Karma obviously did a good job hiring humans to do their dirty job for them. He was human, how did I know? The moment he pushed me, I felt the urge for human flesh. ” Leave now in peace if you want peace” he commanded, ” I detest peace” I told him, ” He has been sent to bring war to us, the indigene of Zumga” He told me, ” That’s not why you want him dead, you have been sent by Karma and Chila” I told him, ” Any how you see it, he must die” He said, ” I have come to prevent that” I told him, ” Then be ready to die” He said moving towards me, the urge for flesh was now increasing greatly inside me, I ran towards him and jumped on him taking him by surprise, he tried kicking me away but I felt nothing , his kicks were weak. I placed my mouth by his neck , ” You look sweet” I whispered into his ears and almost immediately, cut off his ear with my teeth. He shouted in pain as he struggled to get free, ” Calm down son” I said and bit his neck open, he died immediately. I sat down beside his corps as I chewed his ear, ” Sweet” I laughed as I drank the blood gushing out his neck side. I held his head and with my sword separated it from the body, I placed my mouth underneath the head and drank the blood dripping down from it, I then bite off his eyes. I chewed it gently, at last my urge for flesh has been satisfied.May 28, 2018 at 2:12 am #41

I felt no remorse for what I have done, at least, I killed the enemy. I finished with his head and it was then I remembered I had Wenakite to save, I had totally forgotten. I cleaned up my mouth and continued with my run since I couldn’t hear the, tack, tack sound of his horse any longer. Has they say, it’s better not to try it than try it once, you might get addicted to it. My urge for flesh increased greatly, so as I ran, I prayed for flesh. ” Wenakite!!” I shouted at the top of my voice as I ran towards the city of Zumga, I pray he is not dead by now.
I bent by the river bank holding the little baby, he happens to be so cute, very cute. I cried as I saw his mother lying dead by my side, ” She couldn’t even behold her son” I said to myself cleaning the blood stain around my mouth, she is Wenakite’s wife. I stood up carrying the little boy with me, ” Your existence brought about the death of your parent” I told the new baby, he only stretched and laughed, I smiled. Wenakite was also dead, he didn’t die on his Journey to Zumga village, I had saved him that day, that was about 8 months ago. ” Thank you” He told me as I lifted him up to his horse, he had been injured trying to fight against the guys sent by Karma and Chila. ” How did you know I was ambushed? ” he asked as we drove back to our settlement on his horse, ” I overheard Chila and Karma talking about it” I told him calmly, ” What!!! You mean they planned all these?” He asked, I nodded. ” Are you sure of this Ewite? “He asked me, he preferred calling me by my father’s name. ” How else will I know you were going to be ambushed?” I asked him, ” I don’t know but …..” He paused, ” They were the ones who planned this, believe me or not” I said cleaning the blood stain around my mouth. ” Am sorry I never told you I was a Man-eater ” I said, ” Surprised, yes, angry, no” He laughed, ” Have never seen a Man-eater fighting to save a Manhunter, you are a good type” he said. ” Just look at the way you jumped on those two from no where” He laughed and held his side in pain, I also laughed. ” Thank you for saving me Ewite ” he said, ” Shallom” I corrected, ” I would prefer Ewite” He laughed and we drove back to the settlement.
I had thought Wenakite would be wise enough to keep all I had told him about Chila and Karma but no he didn’t, immediately we got to the settlement, he jumped down from the horse and stormed into the tent of the deadly twins Chila and Karma. Minutes later, the Manhunters had all come out from their tents, they came to know the reason behind the noise disturbing the early hours of the morning. ” Warrior lord, listen, we didn’t send boys to kill you, how can we do that to our warrior lord?” Chila asked as they came out of the tent, ” Wenakite, believe us” Karma added. ” Hahaha” Wenakite laughed, ” Of course, you won’t admit you did it, maybe you can explain to me how Shallom heard you guys discussing about it” Wenakite said pointing at me. Chila and Karma stared at me in disbelief, their eyes was that of ” You have just betrayed your kind” . ” Have you suddenly gone deaf and dumb?” He asked them with anger in his eyes, the Manhunters could all now be heard murmuring. ” Who plans thy death of thy warrior lord?” Ologwu, the son to late Mologwu asked no one in particular. ” since you have nothing to say against this allegation, I as the warrior lord hereby pronounce the both of you not worthy to be among the Manhunters, leave this settlement at once, today you cease to be a Manhunter and an indigene of Tankute at large” Wenakite prnounced, he was the warrior lord, it was his duty. Chila took one last ugly stare at me as he held into his tent to get his belongings. ” Wait, If I ever set my eye on you again, I will kill you” Wenakite concluded, ” The warrior lord has spoken” Ologwu, the son of the late Mologwu shouted. To me, that was the worst decision Wenakite could take, he just took it anyways.
” Wenakite ” I started that same morning, Chila and Karma had left us and I of course know where they are heading to, to Kendo , their head. ” Speak Ewite ” he said, I was afraid to remind him that it is ” Shallom”. ” I think tiu took the wrong decision ” I stammered, ” Why?” He asked staring directly into my eyes, ” Now that we have sent them away, how we know what they are planning against you, they can easily hurt you now” I told him and he bursted into laughter. ” I thought of that before taking actions, I have sent Ologwu and three other fighters to go kill them on the way” he laughed, ” What???” I asked in shock, only if he knew they were Man-eaters. ” Wenakite!!!” A guy in distress ran to us carrying a dead body, he was also a Manhunter. Behind him is another guy also carrying a body, Ologwu’s body. ” What happened?” Wenakite asked staring at the bodies, ” Chila and Karma are Man eaters, they killed them” One of the guys shouted as he cried alongside, wenakite turned to me ” Did you know about this? ” he asked me in anger, ” I never knew they were Man eaters” I lied staring at Ologwu’s body and remembering his father. “How did the both of you survive?” Wenakite asked them, ” They let us go telling us to come tell you the good news “the guy answered. ” Bury them” Wenakite ordered, ” I told you , you took the wrong decision” I said, ” Depart from me Ewite” He ordered , I walked away slowly.May 28, 2018 at 2:14 am #42
THE GUARDIANS OF TANKUTE
That was how Karma and Chila departed from our midst, I knew it wasnt over yet, Karma and Chila will surely come back for revenge one day. We didn’t have to wait longer, Chila and Karma soon came back, they didn’t attack Wenakite directly, they targeted his pregnant wife.
They waited for her till she was nine month pregnant, apparently, they wanted to wipe out his whole generation, the unborn child, himself and his wife. As our culture and tradition put it, a man is meant to stay with his wife once she is up to 8 month pregnant. Wenakite has gone to perform his manly duty, to look after his wife. ” Take care of the warriors” he had told me before leaving, ” Take care of your wife” I told him patting his chest, ” Bye ” he shouted and rode off on his horse.
• About a month later, when the warriors have started misbehaving and saying wenakite had taken longer than he should take with his wife, I decided to visit him. I rode on my new horse that fateful night, a new white horse which was given to me since I lost my former one. I got into the village at the darkest hour before dawn, without wasting time, I rode to Wenakite’s house. The door to the hut was open which was unusual for the villagers, they don’t open down their huts at that time of the night. I drew out my sword and advanced slowly into the hut, there was no one in it. ” What is he up to this time?” I asked myself looking round the room when my eyes caught the blood stain on the wall. ” They are in danger ” I shivered as I ran out and climbed on my horse not knowing what direction to run to. ” Wenakite!!!” I shouted as I patted my horse to ride towards the sea, maybe he went to dedicate his child, maybe he has given birth. I rode towards the sea and I could soon start to hear the clashing of swords, a fight was going on. I jumped down my horse and ran towards the spot, I could now see Wenakite on the floor, beside him was a baby and his dead wife. ” Wenakite” I called his name, he was still alive. ” Shallom, take care of my children, Karma and Chil…” Were his last words before passing away, he died. ” Wenakite!!” I shouted his name but all to no avail, he was dead. I stood up in tears and went towards his dead wife, I took the little baby boy beside her, he smiled at me. My tears dropped on his face and he even smiled the more, ” Evil child, your coming killed your parent” I laughed as I lifted him up to present him to the gods of strength, just then I heard another cry , I looked around and just beneath a tree was another baby, I walked towards him and it was then I discovered that Wenakite had twins.
In Tankute, twins were thought to be evil, they are said to bring bad luck to anywhere they are, you must kill them once you see them. As a warrior and protector of Tankute, I knew I had to kill the twins but wenakite had asked me to protect his children. I looked at the two cute boys with tears in my eyes, they were cute. ” Don’t worry, I will protect you guys” I said to them, ” Karma and Chila must pay for what they have done” i told them like they could hear me. ” Today, I present you to the gods of strength and Wisdom, you to are Manhunters, one day you shall come back to protect your people and avenge the death of your parent, I know I have committed an abomination today by letting you two live, let the curse be on me” I shouted lifting them up towards the water. I dropped them on the ground and from a few leaves and sticks I could gather, I made a small basket. ” You belong to me, today I shall imprint on you, you shall never die” I said to one of them as I bit him on his chest, he automatically becomes a Man eater. I placed him in the basket and dropped him in the water, the water leads to the other village of Atata. I took the second and raised him up, ” I think you should be human” I said to him, he smiled again, strange child. I immediately disposed the body of wenakite and his wife, I don’t want the villagers to become shaken and scared of the Man eaters again. I dropped the baby on the ground and covered him up as I went towards where my horse was and climbed on it. I rode into the nearby bush where I could clearly see the baby. The day was now becoming bright, women will soon start coming towards the river to fetch water, they would usually come in the early hours of the morning when water is still very clean and pure. I could soon hear footstep approaching, someone was coming. I cleared the bushes in front of me to allow me have a clearer view of the baby and the one approaching. The woman was with a water pot, the day was still dark and I find difficulty in recognizing who she was. She approached the baby and stopped in shock, ” gods of Tankute” She cried as she bent behind the small baby , ” What a beautiful baby” She said lifting him up, ” Who would have done this?” She asked no one in particular. I soon recognized her, it was Chika, the village barren widow whom the villagers have tagged a witch. ” gods of our land, its true you answer prayer, I shall keep this child as my own henceforth to comfort myself for that I did not have, I shall call him Karma, for beside the sea I found him” She said and lifted the baby up towards the sea, ” Hmm, Karma, the name of his enemy” I thought to myself as I rode away on the horse smiling.May 30, 2018 at 6:47 pm #135
THE GUARDIANS OF TANKUTE
EPISODE: EPISODE 5
I rode back to our camp like nothing had happened, I tried my best to hide the tears already packed up in my eyes. “Did you see him, wenakite?” one of the Man hunters asked me as I entered into our settlement. “No, I did not, his hut was opened but no one was in it” I answered him and made to walk into my tent, “Then, in that case, we shall all go search for him today, if we don’t find him, then we shall appoint a new warrior lord to guide us” he said and walked into his hut. I ran into my tent and fell on my wooden bed as tears poured from my eyes, the cannibals are back again and this time, they came for the warrior lord.
The river from Tankute leads to the small village of Atata, the water serves as a boundary between the both villages but that doesn’t stop them from doing business together. The major occupation of the people of Atata was farming, a rich man was known by the number of yams in his barn or how large his farmland is. Early this particular morning, Anya, a woman in her mid-thirties could be seen walking toward the stream. She is the wife of Omiyi, a young man who had come to settle down in Atata. Anya during her days use to be the most beautiful maiden of Atata but now she was no longer a maiden though she is still more beautiful than some of the maidens of Atata. In her left hand, a water pot made of clay could be seen, she was tying a waist wrapper and a breast wrapper. You might find it hard to believe she is a mother but yes, she was, a mother of a girl, a girl of about 4 years old, faith Omiyi. She swayed majestically to the stream, and made to dip her pot into the water, she drifted back to when she was still a young maiden, she will always take her bath at the stream before fetching water, but now that she is married, she can do such no more. She dipped her pot into the shallow part of the water, she was just about bringing it out when she saw something flowing towards her, it was a basket. She have heard stories of how the gods do bless people with gifts from the river, maybe the gods wanted to bless her she thought. She waited patiently waiting for the gifts to come to her and true enough, the basket flowed to her, but was it a gift? No, it wasn’t, rather it was a baby soaked with blood. She drew back in shock and from a distance stared at the blood soaked baby in the basket, the baby eyes was open and he was moving his body, he was alive. “gods of our land, what is this you have brought to me this morning?” she asked the gods, her eyes were still fixed on the baby. She thought about walking away but her heart won’t let her, that being in the basket is a cute innocent baby. She finally summoned up courage and carried the baby out of the basket, he smiled like he wasn’t feeling the pain, the pain from the wound by his neck side. “Oh sorry” she said to the boy like he could hear her. She cleaned him up with the water from the stream and then hid him in her water pot which she had made empty. She placed the water pot on her head and swayed majestically back home like nothing had happened, she greeted everyone she met on the way back home, if the dogs didn’t miss out, “ Nkita, how are you” she would greet any wandering dog she meets on the road. “My husband, come and see o” she shouted as she dropped her water pot in the middle of their compound the moment she got home, Omiyi from one of his huts ran out towards his wife, “what took you so long?” he asked her, “come and see it, come and see what took me so long” she shouted and he increased his pace towards her. She held his head and directed it into her water pot, he jumped back in fear on seeing the creature in it. “Woman, what have you done this time, where did you get a baby from?” he asked her and she willingly narrated all that happened to him. “gods of our land” he shouted as she completed her narration, “we shall keep the child” Anya said and he stared at her, “what will the people say?” he asked her carrying the baby from the water pot, “haven’t you heard of women giving birth without protruding stomach?” she asked him, he nodded. “We will tell the villagers that was what happened to me” she added with a smile, “who would drop such a handsome child in the stream with such wounds?” Omiyi asked rhetorically, if only he knew the child he was holding happens to be a cannibal. “But something must be done, the chief priest must know about this, we don’t know if the child will bring misfortune to our land” she told her husband, he nodded in agreement with her. “Go inside and take care of the baby, prepare bitter leaf soup for me for lunch, am going to tap my wine” Omiyi told her as he went to fetch his cutlass and rope. “Go well my husband, may the gods guide you” she prayed as she swayed inside, this time the baby was crying.
